The Capital One Cup First Round draw (Football League Cup) resulted in Aldershot visiting Wolverhampton Wanderers for the first time in just over 25 years.
The ‘first’ Division 4 play-off final was held over two legs on May 22nd and May 25th 1987.
Despite finishing 9 points behind Wolves and losing both League encounters Aldershot easily beat the ‘fallen giants’ 2v0 at the Recreation Ground and never looked in any danger of losing the advantage, just a couple of days later, in front of 20000 fans at Molineux.....the Shots ran out easy 1v0 winners.....play-offs are of course so unfair!
But looking back, did the Wolves fans really need to get 'so upset' during and after the game......
Perhaps it was the 'Olympic effect' that made Saturday 11th August 2012 feel like a 'School Reunion'. The weather was kind.....a decent pub was located....the beer was excellent....the food was ok....and the locals were friendly.
Throughout the game Aldershot were probably the better team.....well organised and displaying high levels of fitness, but the score after 120 minutes was 1v1....the Shots goal coming from a towering Michael Rankine header.
The penalty shoot-out saw Wolves through 7v6......penalties are of course so unfair!
