Aldershot Town v Wrexham Saturday 2nd October - game abandoned

I’m pretty sure the extent of the close season pitch renovation at the Recreation Ground was determined by our current desperate financial position, a reasonable approach, and no different to the cause of our somewhat thin and low standard first team squad.

Our club's pretty parlous position was brought into clear focus last Saturday, when the Shots were 'nowhere near' Wrexham in the first half, and the pitch was shown up to be totally inadequate in the second.

But perversely I enjoyed the game. First, it was stopped after 50 odd minutes. I wish this could become the standard misery time for all of our home games. And second, the encore played out by the Wrexham players, with brooms in hand, just in front of where I sit in the North Stand, was so funny, it surely must have been quickly scripted by Netflix at half time. Simply wonderful, and something that will gain entry into my top 50 memories of following the Shots since October 1960. A great anniversary present, crafted in Hollywood.

Oh, and I'm sure the denouement will be delivered through a Shots win in the rearranged game.

Can’t wait.

We normally have a team of volunteers to help look after the pitch, but it was a bit wet on Saturday, so the boys stayed in the garage drinking tea when the referee stopped the game in the second half and took the players off the pitch for ten minutes, to see if the downpour would pass over.

A few Wrexham players thought they knew better and proceeded to play in the paddling pool.

The Wrexham number 10 is reported to earn £5000 a week. Clearly not as a result of his groundsmanship ability....
